Irrational thoughts plague us all.  They come from our beliefs and values which aren't always based on factual evidence.  Consequently having them can cause us to react to life's experiences in a negative way and so increase the stress we experience.  Below are a few examples of Irrational Thoughts.  As you read through them try not to "fight" or "justify" them, but with an open mind ask yourself, "Are these valid thoughts to have?"

1. You must be loved always by those significant to you.

2. You must prove yourself competent, adequate, achieving or at least talented in something.

3. Things must always go your way.

4. Those who fail must be punished. If people act unfairly or unethically they amount to rotten people who deserve damnation and punishment.

5. When dangerous or fearsome things exist in your world you must continually preoccupy yourself with, or get upset with them.

6. People and things should turn out better than they do and you have to view it as horrible or unacceptable if you don’t find solutions to life’s problems.

7. The reason you are anxious comes from external sources (people, places and things), and unless they change you cannot help yourself.

8. You avoid responsibility to avoid pain. You would rather forgo present pain and suffering and inconvenience than to choose a path to grow.

9. Your past affects your present and future. Your past so strongly affected you then, that it must and does determine your feelings today.

10. You can achieve happiness by inertia and inaction or by passively and uncommittedly enjoying yourself.
